Artist Statement

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
Pablo Picasso

I am attracted to texture, layers, and multiple interpretations.
These complex, mood-filled canvases explore the relationship between the tactile and the visual. I want to entice the viewer to go deeper into the painting, to search for the origin of the idea. The outer layer exists because it is supported by rich and interwoven detail underneath.

The process of layering, scraping, diluting, staining, and fragmenting ultimately leads to the discovery of unexpected patterns. I dilute the paint with water or mix it with a gel medium, and apply it over a heavily textured base coat. Drips and the force of gravity coax the colours into and over each other, creating an organic pattern that escapes my control. The more I explore these techniques, the more I discover that letting go of control can be beautifully liberating.
